Internet Free Speech Petition

Internet Free Speech Petition

The internet has become the think tank of the world filled with marketing writers, physicists, politicians, thinkers and general users and if we, those that inhabit this planet, are to solve any of our problems, the internet must remain a place to freely exchange ideas. The United States has laws to protect the citizens of the country from their rights of reasonable free speech from government interference. Unfortunately, this is not a freedom shared by all people of the world. The world is changing quickly because of the internet and even in the United States, the freedom of speech is imperiled not by the government, but by massive corporations with majority interests in the way that the internet is used to express ideas.

When the head of a major internet corporation dines with, plays golf with or meets with members of Congress, the President or even foreign dignitaries, that association could represent a conflict of interest in the area of free speech if the aforementioned affiliation were to play a part in policies regarding how citizens can express themselves regarding public government officials, rulings, laws or the like. Private companies are allowed to put restrictions on what is deemed appropriate within their websites whereas, Congress is not allowed to impose such restrictions. If this association between the heads of major internet companies and members of Congress were to lead to policy decisions by those companies in exchange for incentives then this could pose a massive threat to the freedom of speech for the citizens of the United States.

Should at anytime now or in the future, it be discovered that Congress acted against the citizens of the United States by infringing on their rights to free speech through deals made with internet companies, Congress should be held accountable as well as any company found to have been a part of these acts. Such actions that could present a conflict of interest between the People’s freedom of speech and the policies of an internet company could present as in any number of ways but primarily as this example:

If a citizen of the United States posts opinions against Congress, members of Congress or elected officials and the internet company deletes or modifies the postings or suspends or deletes the citizens account.

If private internet companies are found to have modified or structured their policies regarding content or the right of a United States citizen to freely express their thoughts based upon the suggestion, action or implied suggestion or threat of action either publicly or covertly by any member of Congress, then the rights of the People will have been severely treaded upon. If you feel that the associations of major internet companies with Congress poses a conflict of interest then speak out against these affiliations. The scope of this petition is very specific in regards to Free Speech and the possible infringement of that right by association of members of Congress, Congress and members of large internet corporations.

We the undersigned ask you to sign our petition,

The First Amendment of the Bill of Rights protects citizens from being prohibited by Congress to assemble peacefully, exercise the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press or to petition Congress when these terms have been violated. Federally mandated internet restrictions are not Constitutional and are not welcomed by the people of the United States. Should Congress pass any law restricting or prohibiting freedom of speech or the right to assemble peacefully by any means, including the internet, or be found to have influenced the policies of internet corporations, then this petition has been signed as a legitimate protest against such action by Congress.
